Over the last few years, we have noticed there has been a very large increase in online scams with scammers manipulating the subject into giving them money and gifting them various items.

Our role as Private Detective in Leeds is to gather as much information about the perpetrator of Online Scams in order to provide our findings to the client. When speaking to any person online ensure you have all of their information and you have physically seen the individual on Facetime or webcam to ensure the person you are speaking to online is in fact the same person they are portraying to be.

Scammers often build a relationship online over weeks, sometimes even months, to reel in their “targets.” Eventually, they ask for money to cover things like medical bills or legal fees, insisting the funds be transferred via wire transfer or cryptocurrency to avoid leaving a trace of where the money is going.

Name: Confidential (Female, 42)
Location: Leeds, West Yorkshire
Occupation: Self-employed business owner
Concern: Victim of an online investment scam involving cryptocurrency

Background

The client approached Private Detective Leeds after losing over £18,000 to what appeared to be a legitimate online investment platform. The platform promised high returns on cryptocurrency investments and claimed to be based in London. She was persuaded by a “broker” over multiple WhatsApp calls and emails, who used a fake identity and convincing credentials.

Initial Observations

  • The website appeared professionally designed, with a UK business registration number (which was later found to be cloned).
  • Communication was persistent and persuasive, using industry jargon.
  • Promises of rapid profits were made with staged screenshots of “investment growth”.
  • Withdrawals were blocked without payment of additional “fees” or “taxes”.

  1. Digital Footprint Analysis
    • Investigated the IP address and domain registration of the fake platform.
    • Identified that the domain was registered in Eastern Europe using anonymised services.

  4. Collaboration
    • Worked with cybersecurity partners and legal advisors to document the scam for law enforcement.
